Relay for Life This Weeknd!
Point Pleasant Neighborhood Watch
Looking back into 2009 we were blessed!
January – Throughout this year we strived to increase the number of families registered in the PPNW program. Our goal was to have at least one person from every street within the Boro registered with the PPNW. We started January 2009 with 642 registered members and we are happy to report that as of December 2009, our registration now includes over 1,510 families in the PPNW organization. Are you accounted for?
February - With the help of Jack Burke, Doug Brown & Marty Murdoch we created a Graffiti Clean-Up Crew. You may have seen the crew out and about town cleaning stop signs, poles and walls. They were equipped with graffiti removal kits and successfully removed paint, gum and stickers from town property. Be part of the next clean-up in 2010!
March - We concentrated on our website, www.pointborowatch.com, and made sure it was updated with new information. Please visit this site for important safety alerts and our 2010 meeting dates. Come and join us if you can. PPNW also referred families with children under 10 years old who could not otherwise participate in a swim class to the Rotary Free Swim Program, incorporated a drug and alcohol awareness recovery program and updated monthly crime watch stats here in the Boro.
April – We say thank you to those who visited our PPNW table at the Earth Day celebration in the Community Park. We distributed over a thousand packets of flowers, vegetable seeds and hundreds of bags of Earth-Day friendly compost, as we planted the seeds for public safety. We hope your “green” thumbs produced pretty flowers and delicious vegetables!
May – Thomas Ryan was the recipient of the first PPNW Scholarship Award. The challenge was to write an essay based on the theme “If I became a PPB council person, how could I make the town a safer place to live”. We’re looking forward to the day when Thomas can fulfill his goal.
June – Participating in the Chamber of Commerce “Summerfest” on that beautiful hot and sunny beach day, the PPNW continued its quest to register new members as we promoted our first annual, National Night Out, “The Power of Good Neighbors” event. We gave away beach balls, bottled water and safety literature. We hope you all enjoyed the beach balls and we thank you for stopping by to see us!
July /August – July was crunch time for planning the 08/04/09 National Night Out “The Power of Good Neighbors” in our Community Park. With over 2,000 attendees and 100 vendors, we were able to support public safety efforts by educating residents about drugs, gangs and crime prevention. It was a true success with give-aways, glow sticks and free rides and entertainment for our children, adults and seniors alike! Our Board of Education donated buses for transportation, our PBA & Police processed youth/child DNA and identification kits and our business community like M.E. Sabosik & Associates - Bob & CJ Sabosik, Marty & Paula Murdoch, Beaver Dam Hardware, Ocean First Bank, Rotary International, Our Chamber of Commerce and emergency services of Fire & First Aid partnered in public safety as 5 neighboring towns joined in for the event! We can’t thank Chief Larry Williams and Detective Michelle Hill enough for all their support and energy to help make this a great success.
September – The PPNW participated in the Middle School, Ocean Road and Nellie Bennett “Back to School Night” promoting bicycle safety and donating bicycle helmets to those in need. Over 75 helmets were delivered to Boro families without cost. We also took the opportunity to promote the program and register new members.
October & November brought about hard work, much laughter and kind hearts. We dug in for our first Halloween Parade with the theme of bicycle safety coupled with the 70th Anniversary of the Wizard of Oz. Our float carried 2nd Place in the parade and we threw candy and good cheer all the way down Bridge Avenue. November also brought good will for the Thanksgiving Holiday and many members poured their hearts, hands and donations into St. Gregory’s Pantry. We worked hand-in-hand with Roger Pyrtko, of the Pyrtko Agency on a food and toy drive that was a great success. PPNW members and residents alike also lent a helping hand and box as we worked with PPNW member Wendy Ponzo for “Christmas In A Box” that produced box upon box of toys for struggling families. Then our group took a walk from the Community Park to the Riverfront Park in celebration of our participation in the National Drug & Alcohol Recovery Awareness Program which is now on our website for viewing.
December we are blessed with this wonderful group of people who share the interest of improving public safety and being a good neighbor within our community. We are thankful to our Police Department, Governing Body and Boro Personnel who are there for us all year through. As 2010 is upon us we wish all of you a New Year filled with good health, happiness and prosperity.
To our PPNW family, may you have a very merry and happy, safe holiday. Please make PPNW part of your New Year’s Resolution and join us in 2010 for another fun filled eventful year!
Our Best Wishes,
Susan Rogers, CJ Sabosik & Cathy Aiello
